The SA Plastics Pact members hae published an updated (valid from 2026) On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) Visual Guide. It can be downloaded HERE
The aim of the recycling label system is to offer clear and consistent guidance on packaging disposal to consumers based on actual recyclability in South Africa, as well as to educate customers on available packaging disposal methods.
The Visual Guideline has been developed by the SA Plastics Pact and its members for use by product developers in their design of packaging labels. This guide makes it easier for packaging designers to include clear and accurate OPRLs on their products to inform their customers of what to do with the packaging once they are finished with it.
The recycling label system should be applied consistently on all packaging. The resin identification code placement should not be adjacent to OPRL labelling. Ideally, the identification code will be placed on the base of the pack as communication to collectors. Moulded plastics should carry the applicable resin identification code.

The labelling system is made up of individual blocks that reference either the source or disposal/recycling. These individual blocks can be used on their own or in conjunction with each other, depending on the packaging components. The blocks should always be organised according to the way you would “unpack” the packaging. For example, referring to the example below, on raw meat, the customer would first remove the SLEEVE, then the FILM, then the PAD and finally the TRAY.
The SOURCE block should appear on the furthest left side.
